Charity
I am in a fortunate position nowadays, and I am no longer relying on poker winnings to support myself. A small percentage of my profits from playing poker go to various charities. In 2008, I donated £1,080 to the charities below, which are close to my heart.
I am also on the Charity Committee for the PokerStars Head Office in the Isle of Man. I am open to suggestions for local Isle of Man charities that we can support.
CORE
I have Achalasia, a rare condition which affects a person's ability to swallow. The charity CORE funds much-needed research into digestive disorders and provides information to those in need. Visit their website at www.corecharity.org.uk.
Muscular Dystrophy Campaign
Muscular Dystrophy is a disease which causes progressive muscle weakness and often paralysis. The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation is the only UK charity that focuses solely on the disease, funding research and providing support to patients. Visit their website at www.muscular-dystrophy.org.
The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science
It may be the 21st century, but modern life is still tainted by those who wish to impose their superstitious agenda on the world. In Britain, the NHS uses public money to fund archaic and scientifically dubious homeopathic treatment. In the USA, the perverse views of the religious right have a profound effect on political policy and the freedom of the country's citizens. All around the world, confidence tricksters proclaiming to be 'psychic' take advantage of the vulnerable. The Richard Dawkins Foundation fights the corner of reason, logic and science in the battle against those who would seek to subvert progress. Visit the website at richarddawkinsfoundation.org.
